Norfolk was founded in 1682 and maintains a strong relationship with the sea, and has served as a major port for over 300 years. As a result, Norfolk offers visitors and residents a wide variety of seafood venues and opportunities for water recreation. In addition, Norfolk maintains a very strong tie with the military, housing the Navy's Atlantic fleet. The USS Wisconsin, a retired battleship, is open to the public and serves as a tribute to Norfolk's long naval history. Nauticus, the National Maritime Museum, is an interactive science and technology museum located in downtown Norfolk.

One of Norfolk's greatest strengths continues to be its more than 120 neighborhoods, offering every variety of experience. From waterfront property, to historic luxury estates, to starter homes, Norfolk offers homes and neighborhoods to fit everyone's needs. Historic Ghent is home to many beautiful historical estates. Dating back to the late 19th century, Ghent offers residents a distinguished architectural history, beautiful tree-lined avenues, an attractive waterfront location, and a short walk to Norfolk's central commercial district.
