The City of Hampton is located in the center of Hampton Roads, the major metropolitan area in Tidewater. It is located along I-64, and is serviced by the Norfolk International Airport and Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Hampton is located within a short driving distance of the major resort areas of Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks, and offers several, lesser known beaches with a more local appeal.
The City of Hampton was founded in 1610, and remains the oldest continually occupied English-speaking settlement in the country. St John's Episcopal church, built in 1610, is still in use and open to the public, and is the oldest Anglican church in the country. The Hampton History Museum includes galleries and exhibits from all periods of Virginia history. The Chesterville Plantation Site is a registered historical site and an example of the rich architectural history of the region.
Hampton, with a population of 146,000, provides residents with all of the conveniences of city living but maintains a small town familiarity. It is home to the NASA Langley Research Center, the Hampton Coliseum concert venue, the Virginia Air and Space Museum, and Hampton University, in addition to being located within 30 miles of seven other major colleges and universities.
